About the Trails
The Ludlow Area Sports Trails (LAST) chapter of the Vermont Mountain Bike Association (VMBA) manages the Back 40 network, a compact system of beginner- and intermediate-friendly routes on public land in Ludlow, Vermont. The trails feature a mix of hand-built singletrack and short machine-built flow sections that create a smooth, approachable experience for riders of all abilities. The large, flat parking area and small beginner loop make the Back 40 a natural fit for adaptive programming in southern Vermont.

An adaptive rider tested the trails during an assessment. They found the bridge is passable as-is but would benefit from widening to a minimum of 42”. The bridge was later widened with grant funds from the Kelly Brush Foundation.
How the Trails Were Updated
In 2025, an adaptive trail assessment was conducted in collaboration with the Vermont Mountain Bike Association (VMBA), Vermont Adaptive Ski & Sports, and the Kelly Brush Foundation (KBF). The assessment identified the network as largely adaptive-friendly, recommending a few refinements to improve turning radius, tread stability, and off-camber sections.
Following the assessment, LAST completed the recommended upgrades:
- Climb Trail: Tight turns were widened and benched for easier maneuvering; the bridge was widened.
- Buttermilk Flow: Off-camber tread was leveled and filled for balanced travel.
- Black River Run: Berms and S-turns were reshaped to improve flow and sightlines.
- The Tank (beginner loop): Minor grading improved surface consistency and drainage.
These focused updates maintained the trail’s character while ensuring a smoother, safer experience for adaptive riders.
