In 2010, Windsor County’s Mount Ascutney closed, leaving a significant hole in the town’s social fabric and economic vitality. In a few short years, however, the town took the first steps towards conserving the property for public enjoyment. With the support of the Trust for Public Land and the Upper Valley Land Trust, 1570 acres was conserved. Ascutney Outdoors (AO) was formed as a non-profit organization to take responsibility for the management, oversight, and development of the recreational, educational and community activities, as well as conservation of the land. Today, outdoor enthusiasts enjoy public trails for mountain biking, skiing, walking, and snowshoeing. The National Park Service’ Rivers & Trails Program, State of Vermont’s Recreational Facilities Grant, and a number of foundations provided financial support to improve trails and interpretive signage.
