SUMMARY:Trail Design in an Animate World
DESCRIPTION:A Philosophical Inquiry into Consent\, Relationship\, and Reciprocity \nThis webinar invites trail designers\, planners\, and stewards into a radical reimagining of their role—not as prescribers of sustainability\, but as participants in a living\, animate world. Drawing inspiration from deep ecological traditions\, Indigenous teachings\, and the spiritual dimensions of place-based work\, it offers a reframing of trail design as a reciprocal act rooted in humility\, listening\, and respect. \nPresented by: \n\nZionne Fox\, Director of Relational Conservation\, Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST)

SUMMARY:Vermont’s Land Conservation:  Where Do We Go From Here?
DESCRIPTION:Vermont has an incredible track record of protecting land for people and nature. Using the Conserved Lands Inventory developed by Vermont Housing & Conservation Board as part of Vermont’s 30×30 effort\, we reflect on the distribution of permanently conserved lands around the state\, and how those lands intersect our most ecologically important places seen in Vermont Conservation Design. By looking at these past patterns\, we can celebrate the work by federal\, state\, town\, and NGOs. We can also reflect on the types of lands and parts of the state that have been historically under-represented in our land conservation investments\, and prioritize future places to work for both people and nature. Join us for this exciting webinar to learn how your town’s efforts can contribute to making our conserved lands more diverse\, equitable\, and ecologically impactful. \n\n\nSession 1:  Wednesday\, October 8th 2025\,  11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.  Register\n\n\nSession 2:  Wednesday\, November 12th 2025\,  1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.  Register\n\n\nPresenters \nBob Zaino\, Ecologist\, VT Fish & Wildlife Department \nJens Hilke\, Conservation Planner\, VT Fish & Wildlife Department

SUMMARY:Trail User Survey
DESCRIPTION:The Vermont Trails and Greenways Council (VTGC)\, along with five partner organizations*\, was awarded an eighteen-month grant from the Vermont Recreation Economic Collaborative (VOREC) to address trail accessibility in Vermont. As part of that grant\, VTGC is conducting a trail user survey to gather feedback from people with mobility challenges or disabilities about their experiences when using Vermont’s trails to enjoy nature or pursue recreation activities such as biking\, walking\, hiking\, bird watching\, or paddling.  VTGC and its partner organizations will use this feedback to better understand the obstacles that prevent people with mobility challenges and disabilities from accessing trails in Vermont\, and identify opportunities to address and overcome those obstacles. The survey will be available through Friday\, May 23th. The resulting data will be the topic of conversation at a roundtable event in early summer (date TBD) which survey respondents are invited to attend.  The survey will be open through May 23; please share widely with your networks.  Contact independent consultant Gretchen Elias at gretchenelias@mac.com with questions or for more information.\n*Community Geographics\, Northern Forest Canoe Trail\, Upper Valley Trails Alliance\, Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sport\, and  Vermont Mountain Biking Association

SUMMARY:Plan Trails to Minimize Wildlife Disturbance
DESCRIPTION:A summary of best practices for trail groups who plan\, design\, and manage nonmotorized trails to minimize disturbance of or conflict with wildlife\, specifically large carnivores. Focusing on BC’s habitats\, this presentation delivers a series of recommendations that span for trail planning (macro environmental factors) to trail design (specific environmental features) to trail management (human use and maintenance). \nAs the world population grows and more people are participating in outdoor recreation in wild spaces\, recreation groups need to address the impacts on wild animals. Much work has been done to outline best practices associated with trail planning\, design and management\, to minimize environmental impacts such as erosion\, or use conflicts\, such as mountain bike and equestrian conflicts. While extensive research over the past 30 years has considered the recreation impacts on wild animals\, minimal work has been done to connect this research to trail planning\, design and management principles. \nOur work connects wildlife research with trail planning\, design and management best practices to minimize overlap and conflict between people participating in recreation and wild animals. Our focus for this work is on landscapes typically found in British Columbia and large predators\, such as bears\, wolves and cougars. While other animals\, including ungulates and meso-predators\, will feel impacts associated with recreation\, our work assumes that the impacts on large predators will also apply to these other animals. \nPresenter:\nMagi Scallion has been working in recreation for two decades between Alberta and British Columbia. Her specialty lies in trail planning and recreation management. She developed the first master summer trail plan for the Canmore Nordic Centre\, which included recommendations for trail decommissioning to appropriately manage the ecosystem of the area. She currently works with many motorized sports organizations on similar projects to manage use and maintain environmental values.

SUMMARY:Game of Logging–Trail Crew Saw Training | NorthWoods Stewardship Center
DESCRIPTION:2025 Game of Logging–Trail Crew Saw Training | NorthWoods Stewardship Center\nA collaboration between Vermont Outdoor Business Alliance\, Northeast Woodlands Training\, and NorthWoods Stewardship Center\nDates: Wednesday\, May 14 and Thursday\, May 15\nLocation: NorthWoods Stewardship Center\, 154 Leadership Dr\, East Charleston\, VT 05833 \nDescription: Are you a current paid staff member of an organization\, business\, or municipality who works to maintain trail infrastructure in Vermont and needs chainsaw training? \nTrail Clearing and Storm Damage cleanup presents a very dangerous situation that is compounded by increasing frequency and severity of climate-related weather events. It is more dangerous than looking at a standing tree and predicting what needs to be done to get the tree down safely and accurately. The forces involved in trees that have been tipped over by wind can be hard to read and hence make a plan for. This hands-on training is meant to provide saw users several “tools for the toolbox” to be pulled out when they best seem to fit. This type of saw work is very dangerous. Keeping trails infrastructure free of downed trees and debris is key to the resiliency of our trail networks and communities. Professionalize\, prepare\, and protect your crew and/or self to meet this challenge head-on by learning the necessary skills to safely and efficiently clear blowdown messes. \nThe training curriculum is anchored in Northeast Woodland Training’s Game of Logging Levels 1-4 and has been modified by the organization’s lead instructor\, David Birdsall\, to provide only the most relevant content for trail maintainers in Vermont. Instruction will be provided by an expert instructor from NEWT. \nCourse Content: \n\nSaw Safety\nIntro Limbing and Bucking Techniques\nMaximizing Saw Performance\nDealing with Storm Damaged Trees\nIntro to Mechanical Advantage Techniques\n\nThe training is organized by the Vermont Outdoor Business Alliance and funded by an Economic Development Administration – Travel\, Tourism and Outdoor Recreation grant through the Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing. The purpose of the grant is to professionalize and prepare VT’s trail working industry to be resilient in the face of climate change. The curriculum is designed by Northeast Woodlands Training and vetted by VT trail maintainers. \nOther Details: \n\nApply by 12pm Friday\, May 2\, 2025.\nConfirmation of acceptance will be emailed May 5 by 12pm EST.\nPlease do not register if you cannot commit to full participation.\nMaximum class size is 10. There will be 1 instructor.\nSelected applicants must provide their own complete PPE (hard hat\, eye+ear pro\, chaps\, work boots)\, working chainsaw\, and a NEW chain.\nEach day will start at 8am and end around 4pm and be entirely outside. Dress accordingly.\nLunch will not be provided\, neither will a lunch break. Plan to bring your own lunch and eat when you can.\n\nCost: \nThanks to the grant funding mentioned above\, VOBA and its partners are able to offer this unique training to the VT professional trail community for free so that it will be better prepared to address the challenges presented by severe weather events from climate change. \nEligibility: \n\nPriority will be given to folks currently working paid trail jobs for VT employers.\nPriority will be given to under-represented communities in the occupation in Vermont (women\, BIPOC\, LGBTQ\, New Americans\, persons of all abilities\, etc.).\n\nIf you have any questions\, please email Brian or Kelly at blamoureux@gmscllc.com or kelly@vermontoutdoorbusinessalliance.com.
