DESCRIPTION:Join Lorne Currier\, Green Mountain Club Volunteer & Education Coordinator\, for a hands-on workshop focused on hiking trail assessment and maintenance. Participants will learn practical skills in tread and corridor maintenance\, sustainable trail design\, drainage\, trail structures\, blazing and signage\, tool use\, volunteer management\, and user stewardship. \nOpen to professional and volunteer trail managers from Central Vermont and beyond\, this workshop is a great opportunity to build technical trail skills while connecting with fellow trail stewards. With more than 500 miles of trails maintained by over 800 volunteers\, the Green Mountain Club brings decades of expertise to this interactive field training. \nDate and time: Friday\, October 16 from 10 – 4 \nLocation:  Exact location TBD – somewhere between App Gap and Johnson. SUMMARY:Wilderness First Aid
DESCRIPTION:Learn practical skills to assess a patient\, provide basic treatment\, and manage injuries or illness until professional help arrives. The WFA is 16 hours long (two days)\, and focuses on the basic skills of: Response and Assessment\, Musculoskeletal Injuries\, Environmental Emergencies\, Survival Skills\, Soft Tissue Injuries\, and Medical Emergencies. Following successful completion of the course\, a two (2) year SOLO Certification (Nationally Recognized) is provided. Learn more at the SOLO website. \nLearning Objectives: \n\n\nAssess and document a patient’s condition in a remote setting. Participants will conduct a systematic patient assessment\, recognize signs of shock\, document findings using SOAP notes\, and determine priorities when professional medical care is delayed.​​​​​ \n\n\nDemonstrate first aid treatment for common wilderness injuries and illnesses. Participants will apply appropriate care for musculoskeletal injuries\, wounds\, bleeding\, burns\, breathing problems\, allergic reactions\, and changes in a patient’s level of consciousness. \n\n\nRespond effectively to environmental and backcountry emergencies. Participants will identify and manage conditions such as hypothermia\, frostbite\, dehydration\, heat illness\, bites\, stings\, lightning injuries\, and drowning while using practical survival and evacuation principles. \n\n\nOptional CPR Add-On for $60 can be purchased during registration. CPR will take place on Wednesday\, October 19 following the first day of WFA. Exact time TBD. \nPlease note: In order to hold this pre-conference workshop\, the instructor is requesting a minimum of 8 attendees. SUMMARY:Universal High Efficiency Trail Assessment Process (HETAP)
DESCRIPTION:The Universal Trail Assessment Process (UTAP) and the High Efficiency Trail Assessment Process (HETAP) collect objective information about trail conditions such as grade\, cross slope\, typical and minimum clearance width\, surface type\, firmness and obstructions. Through classroom and practical\, hands-on trail assessment experience\, participants will learn how to objectively measure trails using UTAP and HETAP. Participants will also learn the details of UTAP measurements\, semi-automated wheeled information sensor package measurements\, and HETAP 3.0 Software. This workshop will discuss the benefits of objective information\, the application of UTAP and HETAP in diverse environments\, how to disseminate Trail Access Information (TAI)\, and how that dissemination meets the requirements of the new federal accessibility guidelines for outdoor developed areas.

SUMMARY:Adult + Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED
DESCRIPTION:The American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED program is designed to train rescuers to respond to medical emergencies in adults\, children\, and infants until more advanced medical personnel take over. Participants will be trained to recognize breathing and cardiac emergencies\, and to respond to such emergencies by performing CPR\, using an AED\, and providing any other appropriate care until medical personnel arrive. Participants will learn the proper response to sudden illnesses such as heart attack\, stroke\, and seizures. This training also includes a foundation of first aid for other injuries such as burns and external bleeding. You will receive your First Aid Adult\, Child\, and Infant CPR and AED certifications. \nThis is a blended learning course — there is a roughly 3-hour online training to be completed before the course. A link will be sent via a separate email with instructions after your register. \nLearning Objectives: \n\n\nRecognize and respond to life-threatening emergencies.\nParticipants will identify the signs and symptoms of breathing\, cardiac\, and other medical emergencies in adults\, children\, and infants and determine the appropriate emergency response. \n\n\nDemonstrate CPR\, AED\, and first aid techniques.\nParticipants will perform CPR\, use an automated external defibrillator (AED)\, and provide appropriate first aid for common medical emergencies and injuries\, including severe bleeding\, burns\, heart attack\, stroke\, and seizures. \n\n\nProvide effective care until advanced medical personnel arrive.\nParticipants will apply American Red Cross emergency response protocols to stabilize injured or ill individuals and deliver appropriate care until emergency medical services assume responsibility. \n\n\nPlease note: In order to hold this pre-conference workshop\, the instructor is requesting a minimum of 6 attendees. DESCRIPTION:The Land & Water Conservation Fund supports the development of public outdoor recreation opportunities across Vermont\, with a focus on creating parks and open spaces\, enhancing recreation areas and facilities\, and protecting wilderness areas and forests.\n\nCurrent status: Next grant round anticipated to launch September 2026\nEligible applicants: Municipal entities\, tribal governments\, and state agencies only (e.g. towns\, cities\, school districts\, water districts\, park districts\, etc.)\nGrant amounts: Recommended request range $25\,000-$1\,000\,000 – 50% match required\nFunding source: National Park Service funds\n\n\nThe Land and Water Conservation Fund Program (LWCF) became effective in January 1965 to create parks and open spaces\, protect wilderness and forests\, and provide outdoor recreation opportunities. Funds are derived from federal recreation fees\, Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) revenues from leasing oil and gas sites in coastal waters\, federal surplus real property sales\, and a portion of federal motorboat fuel taxes. Funds are apportioned to federal agencies\, and to the 50 states and 6 territories through the U.S. Department of the Interior National Park Service (NPS). In Vermont\, LWCF is administered by the Vermont Department of Forests\, Parks & Recreation. LWCF grants provide up to 50% matching assistance to the state and local governments.

Funded by one-time allocations by the Vermont General Assembly\, we are launching the fifth VCGP grant round this fall. \nIn order to maximize the impact of the available funding\, the upcoming grant round will focus on project development and promotion. This grant will fund projects that will support local outdoor recreation economies\, but need design\, scoping\, or planning work done to unlock other funding. This program will also help communities and organizations share information about their amazing recreation resources and businesses by supporting marketing\, branding\, and other promotion. \nThe upcoming grant round will be closely tied to the vision\, common objectives\, and themes of Move Forward Together Vermont. The scoring system will be designed to elevate projects that address equity and climate resilience. Example projects that might score well could include: \n\nContracting a landscape architect to complete a park design for a FEMA buyout property\nCreating a regional outdoor recreation marketing plan to attract outdoor recreationists to downtown businesses\nCommunity-informed planning for both building and sharing information about accessible trails\nProgram development for classes or community events focused on building confidence in the outdoors\nCreating a town-wide outdoor recreation wayfinding plan and installing signs/kiosks using accessible signage principles\nDeveloping a community economic recovery plan focused on supporting local businesses\, and outdoor recreation resources following emergencies and natural disasters.\nDeveloping a climate risk mitigation plan and preparing permit applications for identified trail improvement projects.\n\nThe upcoming grant round will be supplemented by Vermont Recreational Trail Funds.  This portion of the funding will be available only to trail planning projects\, due to statutory funding constraints. \nEligibility\nEligible applicants will include municipalities and nonprofits. New grantees will be prioritized\, but previous successful grantees will still be eligible to apply. Current VCGP grantees with active grants as of Dec. 13\, 2026\, will not be eligible.
